Barry Winkleman is a British former publisher and atlas editor whose career included senior work connected with Times Books, HarperCollins and Prion. He is also the father of television presenter Claudia Winkleman and actress Sophie Winkleman. His professional record is strongest around The Times Atlas of World History, where institutional catalogues credit him with editorial direction or responsibility rather than sole authorship.

UK Companies House filings identify him as Barry Lester David Winkleman, born in May 1939, and record his nationality as British. That would make him 87 as of August 2026, based on the filed birth month and year. Companies House notes that information submitted to the register is not independently verified by the service.

Winkleman’s name now often appears in profiles of his daughters, but his own publishing career predates their public prominence by decades. Contemporary reporting and library records show him helping shape ambitious historical reference works, holding a senior HarperCollins role and later managing Prion Multimedia Books.

The Times atlas work that defined his publishing career

The clearest record of Winkleman’s work comes from the international editions of The Times Atlas of World History. A 1978 institutional catalogue record lists historian Geoffrey Barraclough as chief editor while crediting Barry Winkleman with editorial direction. A 1979 Japanese edition similarly assigns Barraclough general supervision and Winkleman editorial responsibility.

That distinction matters. Winkleman was not the atlas’s sole author. His documented role was closer to directing and coordinating a large publishing project that brought together historical scholarship, maps, illustrations and editorial planning.

A 1995 report and interview in Folha de S.Paulo provides more detail about how Winkleman described the project’s beginnings. According to that account, the idea dated to the late 1960s. He said approximately 80 historians from different countries were initially assembled, and he described choosing illustrators rather than conventional cartographers to create the maps.

The same report said the first edition took six years to develop and cost £500,000. Those figures come from the retrospective interview rather than independently audited project records, so they are best understood as Winkleman’s reported account of the undertaking.

Winkleman also described an editorial process that evolved after publication. He said he travelled to many of the countries where the atlas was launched and sought comments from local historians, allowing later editions to incorporate perspectives that might have been overlooked in the original version. By 1995, the report said more than 200 historians had contributed to the project over time.

Institutional records show that his involvement was not confined to one edition. The Bibliothèque nationale de France records a 1985 French version of the world-history atlas as being produced under his direction, while its catalogue for The Times Atlas of European History lists him among that book’s editorial directors in 1994.

Times Books and HarperCollins

Winkleman’s publishing responsibilities extended beyond individual atlas projects. The 1995 Folha report said he had directed Times Books until 1994, although a complete corporate record establishing the beginning and exact sequence of his Times Books titles has not been located.

There is, however, strong contemporaneous evidence of a senior HarperCollins position. In May 1991, the Los Angeles Times identified Winkleman as managing director of general books for Harper Collins in Britain.

A separate Companies House record also connects Barry Lester David Winkleman to the publisher through the HarperCollins Publishers Pension Trustee Company. He was recorded as a director of that trustee company before January 1989 and resigned in January 1992.

Those records describe two different responsibilities. The pension-trustee directorship should not be confused with his publishing-management role or used to assign dates to it that the evidence does not support.

His move to Prion

By the mid-1990s, Winkleman had moved into another phase of his publishing career. In March 1996, an Independent report identified him as managing director of Prion Multimedia Books. The identification is unusually strong because the reporter described telephoning the company and speaking directly with Winkleman.

He remained connected with Prion after that. A BBC-origin report published by Folha de S.Paulo in 2002 identified Winkleman as an editor involved with a Prion Books reissue, providing evidence that his publishing work continued into the new century.

Taken together, the Times, HarperCollins and Prion records show a career centred less on personal authorship than on commissioning, managing and shaping books and reference projects.

Translation work

Winkleman’s publication credits also include translation. His official Simon & Schuster page credits him as the translator of Honoré de Balzac’s Journey from Paris to Java.

Simon & Schuster UK’s page for the book lists an Editions Didier Millet ebook edition published on 20 April 2012. That date belongs to the listed edition, however, and should not be treated as the date on which Winkleman completed the translation. Other catalogue records show an earlier 2010 version associated with the same publisher.

The credit is best viewed as a documented extension of a career already rooted in books and editorial work rather than evidence that translation was his principal occupation.

Family and his influence on Claudia Winkleman

Barry Winkleman is the father of two daughters with prominent public careers. Claudia Winkleman, the television presenter known for programmes including Strictly Come Dancing and The Traitors, is his daughter with newspaper editor and journalist Eve Pollard. Recent Guardian and ITV reporting both identify Barry as Claudia’s father.

Sophie Winkleman, the actress whose credits include Peep Show and Two and a Half Men, is also his daughter. An August 2026 Tatler profile identifies Sophie as the daughter of publisher Barry Winkleman and Cindy Black.

Some of the most revealing public details about Barry come through Claudia’s own recollections rather than conventional biographies. In a 2026 Jewish Chronicle interview, Claudia credited both parents with instilling a practical work ethic: arrive early, help with basic tasks and stay until the work is finished.

She also recalled that her father used to take her to the National Gallery every other weekend. According to Claudia, his rule was that they would concentrate on a single painting during each visit. It is a small but concrete detail that connects Winkleman’s editorial world—built around books, images and historical interpretation—with a documented part of his daughter’s childhood.

Current status

Winkleman is now best described as a former publisher. No reliable evidence establishes that he remains professionally active in publishing in 2026.

His latest unequivocally documented public appearance found in the available record was on 9 December 2025, when he attended Claudia Winkleman’s MBE investiture at Windsor Castle. ITV’s report on the ceremony identified him as Claudia’s father and a former publisher.

A Getty Images editorial record separately identifies Barry in a family photograph taken at Windsor Castle that day. That dated appearance also contradicts unreliable online claims that he died in 2024.

Companies House continued to list Winkleman as an active director of a residential freehold company when the record was checked in August 2026. The company is classified as dormant, and the directorship is not evidence of a continuing publishing career.

Several details commonly included in online celebrity biographies cannot be stated responsibly from the stronger public record. His exact birthday and birthplace have not been established beyond the Companies House entry giving May 1939, and reliable evidence has not been found for his education, present marital status or personal net worth.

Conclusion

Barry Winkleman’s public identity is often reduced to his relationship with Claudia or Sophie Winkleman, but the better-documented story is his own long career in publishing. Institutional catalogues and contemporary reporting place him at the centre of ambitious Times atlas projects, in a senior HarperCollins books role and later at Prion.

His contribution is most accurately understood as editorial and publishing leadership: conceiving, coordinating and directing complex works rather than claiming sole authorship of them. That record gives Barry Winkleman a distinct professional history that stands apart from the later fame of his daughters.
